OLD FRIENDS is a phenomenal labor of love going on near Georgetown, Kentucky. Begun by Michael Blowen in 2003 in response to the thoroughbred racing industry’s failure to humanely provide for horses no longer earning their keep, he began to provide a handful of equine athletes with the kind of retirement they deserved. Constantly expanding, Old Friends is now a safe and loving home to some real stars of racing and also to many other horses discarded by the harsher side of the racing business. Most of these horses would have ended up in slaughterhouses were it not for Old Friends. Its exemplary success along with Blowen’s ongoing work is making a difference in the way the industry regards and provides for its horses.
It happened that my chance encounter with Old Friends during its very early days proved to be a life-changing experience. I was instantly on board with their spirit and objective. It helped me define my mission to create art to help animals, and lead me to expand into equine art.
Proceeds from the sale of any print of an Old Friends resident are always earmarked for Old Friends. And this is one place where all donations really do go directly to the animals. Visit their website, oldfriendsequine.org, or even better, visit in person. You will be moved.
